Load, stop-and-go routes and towing all accelerate brake wear in specific ways. Here is what to expect and what to inspect on a work vehicle.
A work truck and a commuter car with identical mileage can be in completely different places on brake wear, and the reason is not mileage. It is energy — how much of it the brakes have to convert to heat, and how often.
Weight is the multiplier
Braking converts kinetic energy into heat. That energy scales with mass, so a loaded truck generates substantially more heat per stop than an empty one. More heat means faster pad wear, more thermal stress on rotors, and a higher likelihood of the fade that comes with sustained hard braking.
A truck that runs loaded most days is not on the same brake schedule as the same model driven empty.
Stop frequency matters as much as distance
A service route with sixty stops a day puts far more work through the brakes than a highway run of the same mileage. The wear that matters is the number and severity of stops, not the odometer.
That is why mileage-based intervals mislead on work vehicles. The measurement that means something is pad thickness, checked on a schedule.
Towing changes everything
Towing adds mass without adding braking capacity on the tow vehicle, unless the trailer has its own brakes and they are properly adjusted and functioning. A trailer brake controller that is set too low, or trailer brakes that have gone out of adjustment, puts the entire load on the truck.
Worth checking whenever you tow regularly: that the trailer brakes actually engage, that the controller gain is set appropriately for the load, and that the breakaway system works.
What to inspect on a work vehicle
- Pad thickness at every wheel, measured rather than glanced at
- Rotor thickness against the minimum specification stamped on the rotor
- Caliper slide pins, which seize and cause one pad to do all the work
- Brake fluid condition — it absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point exactly when a loaded truck needs it most
- Hoses for swelling, cracking or chafing
- Parking brake function, which gets neglected and matters on a loaded vehicle
- Trailer brakes and controller, if you tow
Brake fluid on a hard-working vehicle
This gets overlooked and it matters more on a truck than on a car. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and moisture lowers the boiling point. Under sustained hard braking — descending a grade with a load — fluid that has absorbed water can boil, and a pedal that goes to the floor because you are compressing vapor is a serious situation.
Follow the manufacturer interval, which is generally time-based rather than mileage-based.
