Getting a Farm Fleet Through Harvest Without a Breakdown

2 min readElite Mobile Tire & Brake

Module trucks and trailers see a season of load in a few weeks. What to check before the window opens rather than during it.

Across Lynn, Floyd, Crosby, Hale and Lamb counties the pattern is the same: equipment sits for months, then runs flat out for a few weeks when nobody can afford downtime. Nearly every breakdown call we take in that window was preventable in the quiet period before it.

The pre-season list

  1. 1Brakes, measured. Not looked at through a wheel. Pad thickness and rotor thickness, on every axle that will be loaded. Loaded stopping wears brakes on weight and stops, not on odometer miles.
  2. 2Tire pressure cold, on every unit including trailers. This is the single highest-value item and it takes minutes.
  3. 3Sidewall inspection. Anything with a cut, a bulge or visible cord is out of service, regardless of tread.
  4. 4Batteries load-tested. Summer heat degrades a battery even though it fails in the cold. A load test before the season is cheap information.
  5. 5Air filters. After a season of field dust they are restricting airflow whether or not anything looks wrong.
  6. 6Wheel bearing play and seal condition. Grit past a tired seal is what destroys a bearing, and it happens quietly.
  7. 7Lights and connections on every trailer. Corroded plugs are the most common trailer fault we find.
  8. 8Spares. Confirm each unit actually has a serviceable spare and the tools to fit it.

What actually fails during harvest

In rough order of how often we see it: tires (overwhelmingly), batteries, brakes, and trailer lighting. Tires dominate because the combination is brutal — highway heat on the way to the gin, caliche and stubble on the way back, and load that changes the correct pressure.

Pressure changes with load

This is the thing most often got wrong. The correct pressure for a loaded trailer is not the same as for an empty one, and running a loaded tire at empty pressure is exactly the underinflation-plus-heat combination that separates belts. Check the tire sidewall rating and the load you are actually carrying.
