Used Tires: When They Make Sense and When They Do Not

2 min readElite Mobile Tire & Brake

A used tire can be reasonable value or a hidden failure waiting to happen. Here is what to inspect before buying one.

Used tires are a real market and they are a genuinely mixed proposition. Some are perfectly serviceable tires taken off a vehicle for other reasons. Some have damage that is not visible and cannot be assessed from outside.

What you cannot see

This is the core problem. From the outside you cannot tell whether a tire was run flat, whether it has internal separation beginning, whether it took an impact that broke cords, or whether it has been improperly repaired.

Those are exactly the conditions that cause sudden failure at speed, and they are exactly what a seller may not know or may not disclose.

What to inspect if you are buying

  • DOT date code — the last four digits give week and year. Rubber ages regardless of tread, and West Texas sun accelerates it.
  • Tread depth, measured across the tread and around the tire
  • Wear pattern — uneven wear tells you the tire came off a vehicle with an alignment or suspension problem, and it also means the tire is not round
  • Sidewalls both sides for cuts, bulges, cracking and curb scuffing
  • Evidence of repairs, inside if you can see it — a plug from outside with no interior patch is a warning
  • Bead condition
  • Any sign it was run flat — scuffing or wrinkling on the inner sidewall

When used makes reasonable sense

A nearly new tire from a vehicle that was totaled or from someone who changed sizes. A matched pair or set with plenty of tread and a recent date code. A temporary solution to get a vehicle moving while you buy properly.

A spare, which mostly sits and needs to be serviceable rather than long-lived.

When it does not

On steer positions of a work truck. On a vehicle that carries people you care about at highway speed. When you cannot verify the date code. When the wear is uneven. When the price difference from new is small — and it frequently is, once you account for the shorter remaining life.

Do the arithmetic

A used tire with a fraction of its tread remaining, at a meaningful fraction of the new price, is not the bargain it appears. Cost per remaining mile is the honest comparison, and it frequently favors new.

Mismatched tires are their own problem

Buying used often means mismatched tread patterns or depths across an axle, which affects handling and braking balance. On all-wheel-drive vehicles, mismatched rolling diameters can stress the driveline.
