A vibration at a specific speed is usually balance. Here is what balancing does and why a new tire needs it.
A vibration that appears at a particular speed and fades above and below it is the signature of a wheel that is out of balance, and it is one of the more commonly misdiagnosed complaints.
What balancing actually corrects
No tire and wheel assembly is perfectly uniform. Small variations in mass distribution mean that as it spins, heavier spots create a force that pulls the assembly out of round dozens of times per second.
Balancing adds small counterweights at specific points to cancel that. Done correctly, the assembly spins smoothly.
Static versus dynamic
Static imbalance is a heavy spot causing an up-and-down bounce. Dynamic imbalance is a side-to-side wobble from mass distributed unevenly across the width of the wheel.
Modern balancers correct both, applying weights on both the inner and outer planes. That is why a proper balance is not just a single weight slapped on.
Symptoms
- Vibration in the steering wheel at a specific speed range — usually a front wheel
- Vibration in the seat or floor — usually a rear wheel
- A vibration that appears and then fades as speed increases past a range
- Uneven cupping wear, which imbalance can cause over time
- A shudder that was not there before hitting something
What throws balance off
A thrown wheel weight, which happens from a curb strike or from adhesive weights failing in heat. Uneven tire wear. A wheel that has been bent by a pothole. Mud or caliche packed into the inside of a wheel, which is a real one out here. And simply mounting a new tire, which requires balancing as part of the job.
What balancing does not fix
This is the important part. Balance corrects mass distribution. It does not correct:
- Alignment problems, which produce pulling and specific wear patterns rather than speed-dependent vibration
- A bent wheel, which is a geometry problem no weight corrects
- A tire with internal separation, which produces a rhythmic thump that varies with speed rather than a smooth vibration
- Worn suspension components, which allow movement that shows up as vibration
- Brake rotor runout, which produces vibration under braking specifically
If a vehicle was balanced and still vibrates, the cause is one of those, and continuing to add weight is not the answer.
Road force balancing
Standard balancing measures mass distribution. Road force balancing additionally applies a load roller to measure how the assembly behaves under load, which catches variations in tire stiffness and wheel runout that a standard balance cannot.
It is worth asking about when a vehicle has a persistent vibration that ordinary balancing has not resolved.
