Caliche, washboard and gravel across Gaines, Hockley and Garza counties wear specific things in a specific order. Here they are.
A truck that spends its days on caliche lease roads out toward Seagraves, Seminole or Denver City wears out differently from one that lives on pavement, and knowing the order things fail in lets you get ahead of them.
First: tires
Not tread wear — cuts. Caliche and gravel edges open sidewalls, and a sidewall injury ends the tire regardless of how much tread is left. The second most common is a puncture through the tread from something sharp on the road surface.
Tire choice matters here in a way it does not on pavement. A tire with a stronger sidewall construction costs more and survives longer in this service, and on a work truck that arithmetic usually favours the better tire.
Second: suspension and steering
Washboard surfaces put continuous high-frequency load into shocks, bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends. Shocks fade first, and a faded shock lets the tire skip rather than follow the road — which accelerates tire wear and every other suspension component at once.
- Bounce test each corner: press down hard and release. It should settle in about one movement, not oscillate.
- Look for uneven or cupped tire wear, which points at worn shocks.
- Listen for clunks over bumps, which points at bushings or joints.
- Watch for wandering or vague steering, which points at tie rods.
Third: bearings and seals
Grit gets past seals and destroys bearings. Washboard vibration accelerates seal wear. It is a compounding problem and it ends in a noisy hub that has to be replaced.
Fourth: brakes
Dust between pad and rotor is abrasive, and loaded stopping generates heat. Brake life on a lease truck is a fraction of what the same brakes give in town.
What slows it down
- 1Speed. Washboard damage scales sharply with speed. Slowing down is free and it is the single most effective thing.
- 2Correct tire pressure for the load, checked cold and adjusted when the load changes.
- 3Shorter service intervals than the manual assumes.
- 4Regular undercarriage washing to get the abrasive out before it works into seals.
- 5Scheduled yard inspections rather than waiting for a failure.
We run scheduled yard visits for oilfield and agricultural operators across the South Plains. Several units inspected where they sit, no downtime, no driver hours lost.
