Getting a Work Truck Ready for a DOT Inspection

1 min readElite Mobile Tire & Brake

Most out-of-service violations come from a short list. Working through it in the yard beats finding out at a scale.

For anyone running commercial vehicles across the South Plains, the items that put a truck out of service are consistent enough to be worth checking deliberately rather than hoping.

Brakes

The largest single category of out-of-service violations, every year.

  • Lining thickness within limits on every wheel.
  • Pushrod stroke within adjustment limits on air brakes.
  • No audible air leaks; system builds and holds pressure.
  • No cracked drums or rotors, no contaminated linings.
  • Trailer brakes functional and connected.

Tires and wheels

  • Tread depth above the minimum — steer axle limits are stricter than the others.
  • No sidewall cuts, bulges or exposed cord.
  • Correct inflation for the load. A flat or badly underinflated tire is an out-of-service item.
  • No missing, loose or broken lug nuts and no cracked wheels.
  • No mismatched or improper tire combinations on an axle.

Lights and reflectors

Cheap, quick and one of the most common violations there is. Walk the vehicle and the trailer with someone operating the controls: headlights, tail, brake, turn, marker, clearance and licence plate lamps, plus reflective tape condition.

Coupling and load

Fifth wheel or hitch secure with no cracks or excessive play, safety chains correct, breakaway cable attached to the vehicle rather than the ball, and load securement adequate and undamaged.

Steering and suspension

No excessive steering play, no leaking or broken shocks, no cracked or shifted springs and no loose U-bolts.

Doing it in the yard

We run pre-inspection checks on site across the South Plains — brakes measured, tires inspected and pressures corrected, lighting checked end to end, and a written list of what needs attention. Far cheaper than an out-of-service order and a load sitting at a scale.
