Brake fluid absorbs moisture continuously, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes the system. Here is why it is a scheduled item.
Of all the fluids in a vehicle, brake fluid is the one most likely to have never been changed, and it is arguably the one where neglect has the most direct safety consequence.
It absorbs water on purpose
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it draws moisture from the air, continuously, through the reservoir and through the flexible brake hoses. That is not a defect; it is a design characteristic that keeps water dispersed rather than pooling in low points where it would corrode and freeze.
The consequence is that fluid quality degrades on a timeline whether or not you drive.
What the water does
It lowers the boiling point. Under sustained hard braking — a loaded truck on a grade, repeated hard stops — the fluid can boil. You are then compressing vapor instead of liquid, and the pedal goes to the floor. That is the failure mode people describe as brakes going out.
It corrodes the system from inside. Calipers, wheel cylinders, and the ABS components that are considerably more expensive than a fluid service.
How to tell
Fresh brake fluid is clear to light amber. Fluid that has gone dark brown is overdue. That visual check takes ten seconds at the reservoir, and it is a reasonable first indicator even though moisture content is measured rather than seen.
Test strips and electronic testers measure moisture content directly and give a real answer.
The interval
Follow your manufacturer specification, which is generally expressed in time rather than mileage precisely because absorption happens regardless of use. A vehicle that sits still absorbs moisture on the same schedule as one that is driven daily.
The service
A proper fluid service flushes old fluid completely through each wheel circuit until clean fluid comes through, then bleeds the system so no air remains. On vehicles with ABS, there can be additional procedure required to properly cycle and bleed the ABS unit.
Topping off the reservoir is not a service. It dilutes slightly and leaves the degraded fluid in the lines and calipers where it matters.
