A caliper that will not release drags, overheats and destroys pads on one side. Here is how to spot it before it takes a rotor with it.
If one pad is worn to nothing and its partner on the same wheel looks nearly new, the caliper is the reason. It applied and did not release properly.
How a floating caliper is supposed to work
Most vehicles use a floating caliper: the piston pushes the inner pad against the rotor, and the reaction force slides the whole caliper on its pins, pulling the outer pad in from the other side. Both pads apply, both release.
The sliding is what makes it work. When the slide pins seize, the caliper cannot float, and the geometry breaks down.
Symptoms
- Uneven pad wear between inner and outer on the same wheel — the classic sign
- Pulling to one side under braking
- A wheel noticeably hotter than its partner after driving
- A burning smell after normal driving
- Reduced fuel economy from a dragging brake
- A rotor with heavy heat discoloration or heat cracking on one side
- The vehicle feeling like it is holding back when coasting
What seizes
Slide pins are the most common. The boots that protect them crack, moisture and dust get in, and corrosion binds the pin. This is exactly why cleaning and re-greasing them with proper high-temperature brake lubricant belongs in every brake job — and it is exactly the step budget work skips.
Caliper pistons can seize in their bores from corrosion, particularly on higher-mileage vehicles.
Flexible brake hoses can fail internally, acting as a one-way valve that lets pressure in and not out. The caliper then stays applied even after you release the pedal, which produces the same dragging symptom with a completely different cause.
That hose failure mode fools people, because the caliper itself is fine.
Why it escalates
A dragging brake generates heat continuously, not just during stops. That heat cooks the pad material, discolors and can crack the rotor, degrades the brake fluid in that circuit, and can damage the wheel bearing on that corner.
So a seized slide pin left alone stops being a slide pin problem and becomes a pad, rotor, fluid and sometimes bearing problem.
The fix
Depending on the cause: service the slide pins with proper lubricant, replace the caliper if the piston has seized, or replace the hose if it has failed internally. Then replace the pads and inspect the rotor, both of which have taken abuse.
