Heat plus underinflation is the combination behind most summer blowouts. Here is the mechanism and the prevention.
Summer is when tires fail, and the reason is a combination rather than a single cause: heat from ambient temperature, heat from pavement, and heat generated internally by an underinflated tire flexing.
How a tire actually fails
An underinflated tire flexes more in the sidewall as it rolls. That flexing generates heat internally. Add pavement that is far hotter than air temperature and ambient heat, and the tire runs hot enough for the adhesion between internal layers to break down.
Once separation starts, failure follows — often suddenly, at speed, which is exactly the worst way for it to happen.
That is why underinflation is described as the leading cause of tire failure. It is not that the tire is soft; it is that it is generating heat it was not designed to handle.
Pressure changes with temperature
Tire pressure rises as the tire heats and falls as it cools. This has two practical consequences.
First, always check pressure cold — before driving, or after the vehicle has sat several hours. A reading taken after a highway run in July is meaningfully high and tells you nothing useful.
Second, a cold morning in fall means lower pressure than the same tire showed in August. Seasonal temperature swings on the Caprock are large enough that pressure genuinely needs rechecking as the weather turns.
Do not bleed pressure because it read high when hot
This is a common and dangerous mistake. Pressure rising as the tire heats is normal and designed for. Letting air out to bring a hot reading down to the placard number leaves the tire badly underinflated once it cools, which is the condition that causes failures.
Load matters in the heat
A loaded truck generates more flex and more heat than an empty one. Pressure should be set to the load, and towing in summer heat is the combination where correct inflation matters most.
What to do
- Check pressure cold, monthly, against the door placard, not the sidewall maximum
- Include the spare
- Inspect for sidewall damage, bulges and cracking before summer trips
- Check the DOT date code — heat and UV age rubber, and West Texas sun is hard on it
- Watch the wear pattern, which reveals chronic inflation problems
- Slow down when it is very hot if you are loaded, because speed compounds heat
