The order of the connections matters, and modern vehicles have sensitivities older ones did not. Here is the correct procedure and what to avoid.
Jump starting is one of the few roadside repairs most drivers attempt themselves, and it is also one where the wrong sequence can damage electronics that cost considerably more than a tow.
The correct order
- 1Both vehicles off, parked so they are not touching, transmissions in park with parking brakes set
- 2Red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery
- 3Red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery
- 4Black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery
- 5Black clamp to an unpainted metal ground point on the dead vehicle — an engine bracket or the block, not the battery negative terminal
- 6Start the good vehicle, let it run a few minutes
- 7Start the dead vehicle
- 8Remove in exact reverse order
Why the last clamp does not go on the battery
Charging batteries vent hydrogen. Making the final connection produces a small spark, and you want that spark away from the battery rather than directly above it. Grounding to the engine or a bracket puts the spark somewhere harmless.
It is a small detail that people skip constantly and it is the reason batteries occasionally rupture during jump starts.
What to check first
Corroded or loose terminals mimic a dead battery exactly, and in a dry dusty climate they build up. Before assuming the battery is finished, look at the terminals — clean, bright metal, clamps snug. That alone resolves a real share of no-start calls.
If it starts and then dies
A vehicle that runs while connected and dies shortly after the cables come off generally has a charging problem rather than a battery problem. The alternator is not replenishing what the starter drew.
Driving it in that state means running on stored charge until it is gone, potentially somewhere less convenient.
If it will not take a jump at all
Nothing at all, with good connections and a known-good donor, points at something other than a flat battery — a failed starter, a bad ground, a broken cable, or a security or interlock issue preventing cranking.
