What you are hunting for in the text: does the shop explain problems in plain language, do they stick to the quote, and how do they handle the angry reviews. A shop that answers a one-star complaint calmly, owns what it can, and offers to make it right is showing you exactly how they will treat you on a bad day. A shop that argues with every unhappy customer is telling you the same thing.
Ask about the warranty before anything else
A warranty is a shop putting its own money behind its work. No warranty, or a vague we-stand-behind-it with nothing in writing, means the risk sits entirely on you. Ask two direct questions: how long does the warranty last, and does it cover parts and labor or just parts. Get the answer before you approve the job, not after something fails.
- Length matters. A longer written warranty signals a shop that expects its repairs to last.
- Parts and labor beats parts only. If a warrantied part fails, you do not want to pay the labor to install its replacement twice.
- Get it in writing. A warranty you cannot find on the invoice is a warranty that does not exist when you need it.
- Ask what voids it. Honest shops will tell you plainly; that transparency is itself a good sign.
Watch how they handle transparency
Trust is built in the boring moments. A shop that will show you the worn brake pad, the leaking gasket, or the cracked belt is a shop with nothing to hide. One that gets cagey when you ask to see the part, or waves you off with just trust us, has earned a little suspicion.
Ask for an itemized estimate up front. You want line items — parts here, labor there — not one lump sum with no breakdown. When the numbers are split out, you can see what you are paying for, compare it fairly against another shop, and catch anything that does not belong.
Notice whether they answer your questions

Beware the upsell that appears out of nowhere

Some of those recommendations are legitimate — a technician genuinely spotted a problem. Some are padding. Tell the two apart by asking the shop to show you and to rank the list by urgency: what has to happen now for safety, what should happen soon, and what can honestly wait.
A trustworthy shop is comfortable saying that can wait a few months. A shop that insists everything is an emergency, every visit, is running a different playbook.
Match the shop to the job — including where the work happens
